“Civic Engagement:

What’s Possible When a Community Connects”

It begins!

Matt Hand strums a few tunes to bookend the first lecture.

The inaugural Lyceum Society Lecture was delivered by Councilman Long. There was no guest for this lecture, as there was quite a bit of ground to cover. Matt Hand was the musical guest. The lecture explored the theme "What’s possible when a community connects?"

Blending historical storytelling, audience interaction, and a family history, Long highlighted the decline of local volunteerism and contrasted it with past eras of civic engagement with specific focus on 19th Century American intellectual ideals.

Emphasizing the importance of dialogue, participation, and shared purpose, the lecture called for a revival of community spirit grounded in both historical awareness and modern action.
